Join us on a fascinating journey through Morocco's vibrant Jewish history, exploring ancient synagogues, vibrant communities, and historic landmarks.
Day 1: Casablanca
Upon arrival in Casablanca, the economic capital of Morocco, you will be met by your driver and taken to your Casablanca hotel, where you will check in and relax for the afternoon. Depending on time, you could choose to have an optional tour of the Hassan II mosque. Casablanca is home to one of the largest Jewish Communities in Morocco which includes the synagogue Beth-El. You could have an optional visit to the Museum of Moroccan Judaism of Casablanca (not open on Saturday and by appointment only on Sunday)
Day 2: Casablanca / Rabat
After breakfast and at your convenience, you can travel on towards Rabat, the capital city and residence of the King. You will have a tour of this historic city including the Chellah, La Tour Hassan, Mausoleum, and King’s Palace. You could have an optional visit to the Jewish cemetery in the nearby town of Sale. This is where Rabbi Hayyim Ben Moses Attar was born.
Day 3: Rabat / Maknes / Fes
After breakfast, you will set off for Fes! You will have a stop in the Imperial City of Meknes. It contains 11 synagogues with 8 still in use. You will find the evidence of Jewish heritage by the Hebraic epitaphs dating from the Christian era as well as Greek inscriptions that still appear in local Synagogues and a place of pilgrimage where the tomb of Rabbi’ David Benmidan is located. You will visit the famous Bab Mansour, Granaries and stables of Moulay Ismael. In the evening, you will finish the drive to Fes.
Day 4: Fes
After breakfast, you will begin your guided tour of the medina, one of the world’s largest walled in cities. You will explore the narrow streets lined with fresh fruit, mounds of spices, intricately woven Berber carpets and many other art objects of Morocco. The King’s Palace, the Jewish Mellah, a Jewish cemetery, the Ibn Dannan Synagogue, the tanneries, and potters are just a few places you will experience. You will also see a plaque showing where the house of the famous Jewish philosopher Moses Ben Maimon was. For lunch, you will eat in a traditional restaurant in the heart of the medina. After lunch, you will complete the tour and return to your riad.
Day 5: Fes Free Day
This will be a free day to explore and relax! You might like to try a cooking class or visit the hamaam, a traditional spa, for a massage!
Day 6: Marrakech
After an early breakfast, you will depart for Marrakech. The beautiful drive will take you up into the Middle Atlas Mountains and along the base of the High Atlas Mountains.
Once in Marrakech, you will check into your riad and then head off to the Jemaa el-Fna, the center square of the medina! Coming alive at night with the local storytellers, entertainers, and mouth-watering barbeque pits, the square is well worth a visit. A quiet cup of tea on the terrace of an adjacent café provides a spectacular aerial view of the bustling square.
Day 7: Marrakech
After breakfast, you will have a guided tour of Marrakech, the southern pearl of Morocco. You will discover the Palace of the Bahia, and many other hidden treasures. After lunch, you will continue with the tour on to the magnificent Koutoubia Mosque and the famous Jemaa el-Fna, one of the center attractions of Marrakech. You will also see the Jewish mellah and the Lazama Synagogue in Marrakech. The tour will conclude with an exploration of the souk (market).
Day 8: Marrakech Free Day
After breakfast, you will enjoy a free day in Marrakech to explore the city. Again, this is a great opportunity to take a cooking class, or perhaps try one of the lovely spas of the city! You may also be interested in visiting the gardens of Marrakech.
Day 9: Marrakech / Essaouira
After breakfast, you will set off to the coastal city of Essaouira, a picturesque fishing town, lying on the southwest coast of Morocco. With an exquisite beach to the south, Essaouira has become one of Morocco’s most popular coastal towns. Many of the countries wood carvers and artists make Essaouira their home. You will have an opportunity to visit the Jewish Cemetery and the Slat Lkahal Synagogue. You will have the opportunity to visit the mellah (Jewish Quarter) which includes the grave of Rabbi Haim Pinto, whose home and synagogue are pilgrimage sites where people visit annually.
Day 10: Essaouira / Casablanca
Your last day of travel will take you back to Casablanca. You will leave Essaouira for Casablanca. If you would like, you can stop at El Jadida where you will be able to visit the citadel and see the underground cistern. You will then continue on to Casablanca, where you will spend your last night in the country.
DAY 11: CASABLANCA / DEPART
You will be transferred to the airport for departure. Say goodbye to your driver and the country that has certainly left you with priceless memories.
